WAILS in Vita: Barbara Marini interviews Federico Franceschetti, co-founder of WAILS, in the article “Federico’s story: first I save the whales, then I graduate”. A computer engineering student and diving instructor, Federico tells how his passion for the sea, handed down by his father and grandfather, turned into research and a company.
From the birth of WAILS within TimelapseLab to the team and the technology: cameras, hydrophones, sensors and artificial intelligence to reduce collisions between ships and cetaceans. The interview also recalls the tests on Lake Garda, in Ustica and at Argentario, and the project in the Maldives with the Coral Restoration research centre.
